Spelling 2014

We are introducing a new spelling scheme this year which will be exciting and fun.

Most people find the process of learning a weekly spelling list difficult and hard to remember. We have previously found that children struggle to recall previous spelling words or apply them into their independent writing.

Our new system focuses on really understanding spelling rules, rather than pre-given lists, and therefore children are more likely to apply this knowledge to unfamiliar words.

As with times tables, children only get better at spelling if they practise ‘little and often’, so we will  investigate the spelling rule on a daily basis, generating and exploring different words which follow the specific rule.

Each week, On a Monday, your child will explore the new spelling rule with the teacher and generate their own word wall. Your child’s WORD WALL is simply a starting point for their learning over the course of the week and should not be seen as an isolated set of words. PLEASE discuss these spelling rules with your child, maybe you could come up with some different words which use that particular rule, maybe even come up with some sentences with the word in them. Children will be tested via spelling dictations on a Friday.

The scheme teaches spellings within a much wider context; exploring and developing a greater understanding of the English language, extending spoken and written vocabulary, and encouraging children to write with increasing purpose, passion, imagination and humour!

Intervention may to be put in place for any children who find spelling more challenging at a later date.  PRACTISE LOTS AT HOME

Below find links to both our parent leaflet and the spelling rules for Autumn term which we will study.

Any problems or concerns then please speak to one of us.

Thank you in advance
