Start to the school year

Wonderful Willow's class blog

What we have been doing this week!

This week we have really settled in to our new class. It has been great fun having Mr Edwards as our teacher. We have had our first ever big write session, it was really fun and got us to structure our work more. We have been given free time to decorate them as well as getting special pens to write in it with.

In art and topic we have been learning about the Aztecs and how they lived in their war like civilization. In art we have been making gods eyes inspired by the Aztecs creativity. We learnt that the Aztecs were blood thirsty warriors. They didn't kill at war they took their enemies and sacrificed them to the Gods. They built there city in the middle of a swamp because, one day their main god told them to find an eagle perched on a cactus holding a snake in it's beak and to built a city there.

In our literacy we have been learning about different word types and what they do to a piece of writing.

Interviews

We will now interview Lois.

Hannah: What dose it feel like to be in year 6?
Lois: I feel like I get more respect.
Hannah: What has been exciting subject so far?
Lois: Topic because it's interesting.
Hannah: Tell us one interesting fact you have learnt this week?
Lois: That everything is made of matter (in science)

Word of the week

This weeks word of the week is...

Implausible by Sam Mc
Implausible means incomprehensible.

Riddle of the week

What does a rich man need?
What does a poor man have?
And what is greater than God?

Songsters' song words

We have a huge number of 52 children in songsters this year - how fantastic!

Throughout the year, there are plenty of exciting opportunities and concerts which the children will invited to perform in.

Below is a link to the song words that we are currently practising in rehearsals - please learn these ASAP - We want to perform in assembly within the next few weeks.

A Passport to the World

The link below will take you to the homework for this term, which will be focussing on different countries around the world.

We ask for the children to spend 30 minutes on each their Maths and Literacy homework, and that each is presented to a good standard. If your child doesn't manage to finish in the time, then that is fine - please just get them to write '30 minutes' on the bottom of their homework, and sign it.

Please speak to us with any problems!

Spelling 2014

We are introducing a new spelling scheme this year which will be exciting and fun.

Most people find the process of learning a weekly spelling list difficult and hard to remember. We have previously found that children struggle to recall previous spelling words or apply them into their independent writing.

Our new system focuses on really understanding spelling rules, rather than pre-given lists, and therefore children are more likely to apply this knowledge to unfamiliar words.

As with times tables, children only get better at spelling if they practise ‘little and often’, so we will  investigate the spelling rule on a daily basis, generating and exploring different words which follow the specific rule.

Each week, On a Monday, your child will explore the new spelling rule with the teacher and generate their own word wall. Your child’s WORD WALL is simply a starting point for their learning over the course of the week and should not be seen as an isolated set of words. PLEASE discuss these spelling rules with your child, maybe you could come up with some different words which use that particular rule, maybe even come up with some sentences with the word in them. Children will be tested via spelling dictations on a Friday.

The scheme teaches spellings within a much wider context; exploring and developing a greater understanding of the English language, extending spoken and written vocabulary, and encouraging children to write with increasing purpose, passion, imagination and humour!

Intervention may to be put in place for any children who find spelling more challenging at a later date.  PRACTISE LOTS AT HOME

Below find links to both our parent leaflet and the spelling rules for Autumn term which we will study.

Any problems or concerns then please speak to one of us.

Thank you in advance

Welcome Back

Welcome Back

I hope that you all had a fantastic summer, the children are back looking clean and shiny, and are working hard - it already feels like we have been back weeks!
We are now settling into the new school year and that the children are looking forward to having the additional responsibilities that Year 6 brings, such as being school monitors and house captains. Alongside this, there will be exciting new challenges and plenty of hard work. To help the children with their maths, it is important that they know their tables up to x12 and that they are practised regularly. For literacy, the children should read for at least 20 minutes every night and learn spelling rules thoroughly; children will have receive a list of their spellings each week and these should be kept safe for easy reference. Don’t forget: these will be tested each week!
Homework will be set for both maths and literacy each week and children are expected to spend thirty minutes on it.
We have lots of exciting events happening throughout the term, and we are all looking forward to learning all the interesting topics that are planned this term.

If you have any questions or concerns then do not hesitate to come and speak to us, write a message in your child's homework diary or arrange an appointment via the office.

I am looking forward to a successful and fun year!

Mr Edwards
