Take one book week! By Lucy & Joseph

Take one book week was where teachers chose a book for the class to read and share their thoughts.
Our book was the arrival and it had no words.
Rendered Image
We had to go over it a few times to understand what was going on. The arrival was about an immigrant   that went to a different country and couldn't understand the language that they were talking, also for no reason there was lots of eyes on buildings. Mr Edwards chose this book because he thought it was very challenging. He also picked it because it would intervene with lots of other subjects.
Rendered Image Although we didn't change classes like we usually do for maths we stayed where we are and did some facts about immigrants. We wrote a bar chart about the list of immigrants and rounded it and some of us did a pie chart.

Art

In art we did some amazing drawings of made up creatures. We each used our wildest imagination to design and write about weird animals. Each one looked great and we worked hard. Diet, habitat, likes, dislikes, and habits.

Now we will show you some of our work.

Welcome back!!!

I hope that you all had a fantastic summer, the children are back looking clean and shiny, and are working hard - it already feels like we have been back weeks!
We are now settling into the new school year and that the children are looking forward to having the additional responsibilities that Year 6 brings, such as being school monitors and house captains. Alongside this, there will be exciting new challenges and plenty of hard work. To help the children with their maths, it is important that they know their tables up to x12 and that they are practised regularly. For literacy, the children should read for at least 20 minutes every night and learn spelling rules thoroughly; children will have receive a list of their spellings each week and these should be kept safe for easy reference. Don’t forget: these will be tested each week!
Homework will be set for both maths and literacy each week and children are expected to spend thirty minutes on it.
We have lots of exciting events happening throughout the term, and we are all looking forward to learning all the interesting topics that are planned this term.

If you have any questions or concerns then do not hesitate to come and speak to us, write a message in your child's homework diary or arrange an appointment via the office.

I am looking forward to a successful and fun year!

Mr Edwards

Goodbye and good luck!

It is hard to believe that it’s time to say farewell to you all, but it is a time for reflection, celebration, anticipation and hope.

You have definitely come a long way from the timid new reception students you were seven years ago, to the  wonderful young people you are today

As it comes time to say goodbye and your days at primary school come to an end, I am sure that you will be taking with you many cherished memories and friendships. Remember the highlights of primary school, whether it be your friendships, camps, excursions, sports teams,  great times in the
classroom or any number of wonderful experiences you would have had at Oakwood Primary School during your time here. In doing this though, remember that if you spend too much time looking at the doors that close behind you, you may miss seeing them open up ahead.

The end of Yr 6 is certainly a significant milestone in your life. It is time to celebrate the wonderful things you
have achieved so far in your learning journey and to look ahead to the new adventure that awaits … high school.
Celebrate this milestone with your friends, your family and your school. Be proud of your achievements and what you have learnt, because it’s those things that have helped to shape the person you are today.

We have loved teaching you this year, and will miss you all terribly - Good luck and dream big!

Seussical Cast and Rehearsals

What a talented group we have in Year 5 and 6.

A huge congratulations on all the children for being confident and putting on such great auditions for Seussical - it really does promise to be a great show.

It was such a hard decision for Mr Edwards, Miss Fowler and Miss Bick - you truly made our jobs hard!

Here is our cast list.

A huge congratulations to everybody; obviously some people will be slightly disappointed, but the standard was so high, that it was very difficult to pick. As always, we will endeavour to utilise the fabulous talents of all our Year 5 and 6 and everyone involved is equally important!

Below is a link to the rehearsal schedule for the first half of the summer term.

Please take note of when you are required, rehearsals will be Tuesday afterschool from 3:15 - 5pm.

PLEASE come to these prepared, having looked at and (preferably learned) the songs / scenes; it really makes it so much easier!

SATS revision resources

Dear parents

The time seems to be flying by so quickly!

Obviously, the SATs tests for the year 6 children is coming closer and closer, and we have been asked by many parents as to what you could be doing at home to support your children in their learning.

We have therefore, put together a folder of useful resources, which you may wish to use at home. There is a collection which have been put together by the teachers, which we feel will be most beneficial.

Please follow the link below.

Let us know what you think of them!

Literacy:
In literacy this week, we have been focussing on how to make instructions.
On Monday we made instructions on how to make a cup of tea for an alien. We had to use clear and concise instructions otherwise they would become to confusing to follow.

Art and D.T
In art we have been making moon buggies. During this topic we have to work completely independently. we have already made the frame, the axels are in, the axel supports have been added and we recently made pulleys.

Maths: In maths we were ordering fractions, decimals and percentages. Then some people went on to do linear equations. This was very difficult and very confusing.

STAR OF THE WEEK:
LAST WEEK: AMY
THIS WEEK: FRANCESCA

Writer of the week!!!:
.........Ryan Corcoran
Ryan got writer of the for our big write. We had to continue a horror story.

Also a super big well done to our fabulous netball team! They won the league against all odds and came 3rd in a high five tournament!!! 🎉🎊🎉

World book day:
On Friday we celebrated World Book Day. Everyone dressed up as their favourite characters. There weeper many good costume.  Even the teachers dressed up!!!
Mr Edwards dressed up as fantastic mr fox.

Spelling: This week in spellings we have been doing -ent such as: excellent, independent, despondent, intelligent and incompetent!

P.E:
In P.E we played football. This week sports committee took our lesson. There were four teams, team 1,2,3 and team 4. The overall winners were team 4 followed by team 1. We all had a great time playing outside in a mini tournament.  We used two pitches that had different rules. Amy and Hannah took one match and Zaid and Daniel took the other with William looking at both.

Music: This week in music we are making sound tracks for Skyfall music video.

French: Last week in French we had an assessment.

Jokes:
I moustache you a question, but, I'll shave it for later.

Why did the man not play cards in the jungle?

Because there were cheetahs.

Goodbye: Sadly, Mrs Clark is leaving. We all hope her new job is fun, and that she will enjoy it.

R.E:
In  R.E we have been writing scripts for olden day mystery plays. Our group is doing Noah's arc. Last week we wrote our scripts and this week we are going to perform them.

Last week, we finished our illuminated manuscripts. They all look colourful and light up our room. We used gold and silver pens and pencils and Mrs Mainwaring cut some straws up to use as olden day fountain pens with black paint as ink. These were very hard to use so she also bought in some normal fountain pens which were easier to use-and, neater!-

Science: We have been learning how seasons occur.
The Earth is tilted on its own axis (23.5°). This means that we have seasons depending on which way the Earth is tilted. When the Northern Hemisphere is tilted towards the sun it is summer and when it is facing away it is winter.
